Michael Schuckers has advanced our understanding of Shot Quality, and therefore goaltending, by the use of Spatially Smoothed Save Percentage Maps. The result is DIGR – a defense independent rating of goaltenders. He has used data from the 2009-10 NHL season in a ‘spatially smooth’ regression to estimate an NHL goaltender’s shot quality adjusted save percentage. This approach recognizes shot location, as well as shot distance, type and on-ice situation. His results can be directly compared to those of Ken K.
